Awards

The hand surgical center of our Department was recently granted a recertification as Hand Trauma Center by the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH).

To be granted this certification, you must meet strict requirements and guidelines that ensure hand surgery at the highest level. We have been treating all degrees of severe hand and arm injuries in our replantation center for over 40 years.

Winner of the 2nd and 3rd prizes of the TUM faculty IdeAward competition 2014

The TUM IdeAward honors outstanding ideas with high market potential. In 2014 with 33 teams presenting ideas, the committee awarded our scientific group with the 2nd and 3rd prizes, which are described briefly below.
 
2nd Place EmaCure^®
Prof. Arndt Schilling and his team developed a method to improve wound healing in chronic wounds. As part of an individualized therapy, the patient’s blood sample is processed in hypoxic conditions which simulate wound surroundings, to stimulate factors for the formation of new blood vessels. The processed blood is then applied directly to the wound using a bioactive dressing, which reactivates the body’s own tissue repair mechanism.
 
3rd place BioBreast^®
PD Dr. Jan-Thorsen Schantz and his scientific colleagues, Prof. Dietmar Hutmacher and Prof. Laszlo Kovacs developed Biobreast^®, a 3D-animation to visually predetermine the breast implants by factoring in the patient’s body and wishes before the operation. The individually constructed, biologically degradable polymer-implant will then be transplanted with the patient’s own fat. The polymer-construct degrades gradually over time without releasing harmful substances and simultaneously developing its own body tissue, eventually resulting in the initially planned and individualized breast.
